Dr. Raymond Hatland – dentistry

Education and training

I attended the University of Illinois in Urbana from 1960 to 1962 in a predentistry curriculum. I then attended the University of Illinois College of Dentistry from 1962 to 1966, graduating in the upper 20% of my class.

I also did a research project in biochemistry during my junior and senior year.

Not wanting to specialize I went to the US Army’s one year rotating internship program at Ireland Army Hospital in Fort Knox, Kentucky. In this program I received advanced training, in all specialty areas, including oral surgery, fixed and removable prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, pedodontics and oral medicine.

I received special training in the treatment of temperomandibular disorders and authored an unpublished research thesis relating the biological stress response to pain and dysfunction in the head and jaw.

In 1972 to 1975, I took continuous training in traditional orthodontics taught by Dr. Robert Donovan DDS, Ph.D., founder of the Donovan Academy of Orthodontics. Since that time, I’ve taken easily over 1600 hrs of continuing education courses in all of the above areas of dentistry as well as functional orthodontics and many alternative and energy system related courses and seminars.

Though I have taken courses in homeopathy, acupuncture, nutrition, bioenergetics, electro-acupuncture by Voll, [Applied, Educational, Behavioral and Dental Kin e siology], Gigong, Chinese Energetic Method and Thought Field Therapy, I only use the knowledge I have gained from these courses as I feel appropriate.

Contributions/Publications:

I have written several articles about my periodontal research regarding the Reverse Gum Disease Program, and they are available on request.

I have been selected a member of America ‘s Top Dentists and named Dentist of the Year for 2003 thru 2005 by the Consumer Business Review.

I am a member of the American Dental Association, the Indiana Dental Association, the Indianapolis District Dental Society, the Holistic Dental Association and an associate member of the Chicago Dental Society.

Healing philosophy or mission

True healing takes place naturally when the innate intelligence within the body of each person is in clear control of the energy system and the healing process. There are many issues that interfere with this process. Our emergency defense mechanisms such as the fear based fight or flight response, and inflammatory response to trauma or agents can become major impediments to the healing process if for various reasons they do not turn off.

Without going into too much detail helping my patients turn off chronic or overly acute defensive reactions is an important part of my holistic practice. These defensive reactions tend to not be too bright or creative in solving health problems and are major causes and contributors to most diseases. Since the energy system affects everything likewise, everything affects the energy system and that’s where the challenge is. I usually limit my help to those areas that are affecting the oral health of my patients.
Uniqueness and what makes you good

Describe your style or approach:

I’m a friendly person who enjoys friendly professional relationships with my patients. I am serious about what I do for each patient. One of my goals is to help each patient understand their oral condition and to reduce or eliminate any fear of their dental issues or dentistry.

It is important to me that my patients understand what I see and what the possible solutions are to their problems. When I am sure that my patients understand what is going on in their mouth, we can then develop a treatment plan to correct and improve their dental health and appearance. I listen first, and then question and test, then I listen and test again before giving my professional opinion.

What makes you different/good at what you do?

Wanting to truly help my patients and my professional and extracurricular education make me different and have helped me to become good at what I do. Over the years I’ve developed my skills and knowledge of how to help patients with safer and more biologically and energetically friendly techniques.

I will spend the necessary time with those patients who have a lot of fear or phobias until they are greatly reduced or eliminated, so you can have a positive experience having dentistry done. Nitrous oxide analgesia is also available to help young kids and adults have a pleasant experience and for those patients who don’t laugh at my jokes.

I take special care with patients who have allergies or special and serious health issues, and I work with other traditional or alternative healthcare professionals as synergistically as possible. My training and experience in orthodontics, treatment of temporal mandibular disorders, and cosmetic dentistry have greatly enhanced my ability to help my patients with complex problems.

Why do you do what you do?

Since I was a kid I always enjoyed and wanted to help people. Since eighth grade I wanted to become a dentist, and I’ve been fortunate in finding a profession that fits me well.

I have always had a keen interest in uncovering the mysteries of life and health, and my experience with yoga meditation and the Oriental healing systems as well as the biochemistry of nutrition and the body’s stress reactions opened me up to the value and importance of the bio-energy system.

Services and products

I have a general dentistry practice that is dedicated to improving my patients’ dental and general health. My practice is mercury free, and I focus on increasing the beauty and internal comfort of the mouth, lowering the internal chronic and acute stress levels in general, and eliminating disease and pain in the teeth, gums and TMJ structures.

My approach is to educate and empower each patient to reach a higher level of health and well being.

I enjoy doing cosmetic dentistry and giving patients great smiles. I also have a unique and somewhat revolutionary periodontal program that reverses gum disease non-surgically even in advanced cases.

How does your healing modality work?

In my quest to learn about some of the many secrets of health, I received training in many healing modalities (Chinese Energetic Method, Nutrition, Yoga, Feldenkrais, the Kinésiologies, Qigong TFT, etc. along the way. These different approaches to reducing internal stresses in our body and energetic systems are used where and when I feel they are appropriate. I approach each of my patients’ dental problems with the sincere intention to help them with their concerns and desires compassionately, safely, patiently and in the best possible way.

Increasing the sense of balance and well being in my patients and helping them understand dentistry and whole body health is an important goal for me.

I seem to attract patients with challenging situations. Energy testing along with conventional tests is used to gain insight into each patient’s problems. Several highly effective alternative and energy system techniques can be used to help patients with their fears and pain. Pain and the fear of pain are challenges to having good dentistry done, so I go to great lengths to reduce and eliminate anxiety and/or pain during your dental appointments.

How do you see your services evolving over the next three years?

My practice has changed in some way every year. I’m always looking for better ways to do things. Developing The Reverse Gum Disease Program continues to be a major effort for me. This is a unique patient friendly training program which is now being fine tuned to increase the number and percentage of patients who successfully make my Perio Honor Roll and do it with fewer training sessions.

I will continue to develop and implement this program and find ways that more people and professionals can benefit from this breakthrough.
